The definition of kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
This is a way of life that is all about putting the needs of others above our own.
In today’s world this is becoming increasingly counter-cultural.
Busyness, tiredness and the me-centred philosophy we are all influenced by are sapping our natural abilities to be kind towards others.
We live in a world where people are consumed by the push from our culture to plough their energies into looking after themselves – earning money for all the possessions they want to buy, investing time into nurturing their homes and possessions and expending their energies into maintaining the velocity of the whole materialistic treadmill.
The results of this are that people have very little time left for others.
We live in a world where our elderly are increasingly forgotten about, abandoned and isolated.
We live in cities where the code of conduct is never to make eye-contact, least of all have the courtesy to smile or chat.
We live in communities where many people don’t know their next-door neighbours.
Is all hope lost? Are we to resign ourselves to ever-increasing detached communities, where people live isolated lives taking care of themselves and their own?
No, God has an answer!
The fruit of the Holy Spirit which are listed in Galatians 5:22 are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
God has always been counter-cultural.
Jesus was counter-cultural and it got Him in a whole load of trouble!
And with the Holy Spirit working inside us, Christians are counter-cultural.
Because the fruit of the Holy Spirit is counter-cultural!
However, the only way that the Holy Spirit can work within us and produce the fruit described here is if we choose to follow God’s lead rather than go our own way, allowing ourselves to be influenced by our culture and the temptations we face in life.
Bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit is a choice we have to make daily.
The things listed in Galatians 5 are not qualities we need to only yearn for, aspire to and dream of, but barely see a glimpse of in reality.
They can truly be the fruit of our lives. This is because when we surrender to the Holy Spirit and His will for our lives daily we see the fruit that He brings affecting us and the those we come into contact with.
To display the kindness of God in our lives we have to be intentional, make a choice and hand the driving seat of our lives over to Him.
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
Just as we choose what clothes to wear each day we need to choose to dress ourselves in the Holy Spirit each day and allow Him to be at the forefront of all we do, bearing the wondrous fruit described in Galatians 5.
Imagine, what effect we could have on our communities if every believer in the whole world made the choice every day to be led by the Holy Spirit?
Imagine the harvest of fruit we could see in our world if every Christian intentionally dressed themselves in the Holy Spirit every day?
Imagine the abundant blessings we could see from God?
Kindness needs to increase in our world. The Random Acts of Kindness movement is committed to encouraging us to practice kindness and pass it on to others. Imagine if everybody practiced this even once a week!
Why has such a movement for what may seem to some of us as a rather basic human quality been created? Because we live in a world which has become starved of kindness.
To be a follower of Christ is to live the life that He did, one of kindness, mercy, grace, compassion and wisdom.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t manage that alone. Thankfully, I don’t have to. I have the Holy Spirit and all He promises to help in making my life a glory to God.
What would this life look like?
He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?
And now it’s linkup time!!!
